Max's Family Restaurant began in the heart of Vandalia as a dream shared by a retired truck driver and his grandmother’s secret cornbread recipe. What started as a tiny diner with only 6 tables quickly gained a loyal following for its warmth, comfort food, and no-nonsense coffee refills. Max, the founder, believed in serving meals "like Sunday supper every day" — and the locals agreed.
By 1995, Max had converted the old firehouse on Main Street into the restaurant's new home, where it still stands today. The fire pole is gone, but the spirit of service and community still burns strong. The menu expanded, the staff grew, and Max’s legacy became a part of the town's heartbeat.
Today, Max’s Family Restaurant remains proudly family-owned. Whether you’re grabbing a quick breakfast on the way to work or gathering for biscuits and gravy after Sunday church, you’re part of the family. And if you're lucky — you'll catch a whiff of Grandma’s peach cobbler in the air.
